How much life insurance do you need?

Get a tool and the logic behind it: taking into account income years, debts, schooling costs, and what you're already protected with.

A straightforward approach is to total what your income could have supported and deduct existing assets. It won't be exact, and it doesn't have to be; term policies come in standard amounts and your objective is a figure that would let your household maintain stability through the critical years.

Coverage estimate

$1,765,000

Estimate = annual income × number of years + outstanding debts + education funding − existing savings and coverage, then round to the nearest $5,000. Use this as your starting place, not as professional guidance.

Why those inputs

How long to cover. Between ten and twenty years is the standard recommendation; the exact length depends on when your dependents will become self-sufficient. Households with school-age children in Mission Viejo typically select the upper end since costs for care, housing, and schooling cluster together during these years.

Outstanding debts. Your mortgage is typically the biggest debt families carry. Securing coverage equal to what you owe gives survivors the freedom to decide their housing situation without financial pressure.

Costs of education. Allocate a sum per child in today's money. Adding this now is simpler than purchasing a second policy after the fact.

Existing coverage. Bank balances available for emergencies and group insurance provided through your employer are both relevant. Remember that employer-provided coverage typically stops once you leave that job, so many people only count a fraction of it.

Once you've determined an amount, the quote tool lets you see what that amount would cost monthly across 10 to 30-year options from various carriers. Quoting slightly higher coverage is typical because at younger ages, the monthly premium increase is minimal.
